5 Shows like The Killing: Who Killed Rosie Larson?

If you’re a fan of the traditional ‘whodunnit’ format, The Killing will have you guessing at very turn. Just when you think you have all of the answers, you will come across another twist. If you simply cannot get enough of crime drama, try TV shows like the brilliant Nordic drama, The Bridge, or the more lighthearted, Unforgettable.

Lives Lost and Lives Destroyed

When the body of 17-year-old Rosie Larsen is found in the trunk of a submerged car, lives are turned upside down and political careers are put in jeopardy.

Detective Sarah Linden leads the case whilst battling through her own personal drama, but will she truly get to the bottom of the case?

As the series progresses, we learn that Rosie lived a separate life and her parents’ picture perfect marriage is strained.

If you’re looking for TV series like The Killing that are just as intense, Those Who Kill and the Danish version of The Killing are definitely worth a watch.

‘The Killing (Danish Version)’ (NRK, 2007-2012)

The US version of The Killing was a remake of the original Danish show that hit our screens in the Nordic noir boom.

This time, Sarah (Lund) is played by Sofie Gråbøl of winter sweater fame, who’s the stand out star of the show. Bolshy Sarah is not prepared to let anything stand in her way of finding out the truth, including the oppressive councillor Troels Hartmann, who gets caught up in the investigation in the midst of his run for mayor.

You’ll need to be a fan of subtitles to watch this show, but we promise that the extra effort will be worth it.

Similarity Match: 95%
The US version is a direct remake of the original Danish version, so they are very alike in terms of plot line. We have to say, though, that the Danish version appears a lot more chilling, mainly down to the terrific performance from Sofie Gråbøl

‘The Bridge’ (Nimbus Productions, 2011-)

If you’re a fan of Nordic drama, The Bridge will have you gripped to the edge of your seat.

When a body is discovered right in the centre of the bridge between Denmark and Sweden, detectives from each country must come together to solve the crime. Unlikely duo, Saga Norén and Martin Rohde, strike up great rapport as they follow a search that has many surpassing twists and turns.

The team is constantly running against the clock in order to prevent further deaths, but will they succeed?

Similarity Match: 90%
Just as The Killing delves deep into the central characters, as well as focusing on the plots themselves, The Bridge does a great job of mixing personal relationships with professional duties. This show may just be even better than The Killing, in our opinion.

‘Those Who Kill’ (Fox 21, 2014-)

Another series like The Killing is Those Who Kill. The original Danish TV series first aired in 2011 and we can now watch this US version (as of 2014).

The US version closely follows the original story of Catherine Jensen, a homicide detective who’s just been promoted and is out to impress. Catherine recruits forensic expert, Thomas Schaeffer, to help her solve the many homicides uncovered by her police force. Catherine is also battling a personal case, as she continues to investigate the disappearance of her brother.

The Danish version of the show won rave reviews and we think that the US version deserves a lot of praise, too.

Similarity Match: 80%
Like Mireille Enos in The Killing, Chloe Sevigny excels in the lead role, showing once again how kick-ass female detectives can be.

‘Unforgettable’ (CBS, 2011-)

When former NYPD office, Carrie Wells, discovers that she has a rare disorder in which she can visually remember everything, she decides to return to the force to use her talent for the greater good.

As well as getting to grips with her condition and her return to the police force, Carrie must face her ex-partner, played by Dylan Walsh, who just happens to be her boss.

With fast moving plot lines and new crimes to solve on a regular basis, each episode of Unforgettable is fresh and something that you can dip into despite missing the previous episode.

Similarity Match: 75%
Despite the show’s name, this show is definitely not one to forget. It’s similar to The Killing in that Carrie uses her expert skills to hunt for criminals, but a little more lighthearted if you want a little relief from a heavy series like The Killing.

‘Twin Peaks’ (Lynch/Frost Productions 1990-1991)

The body of prom queen, Laura Palmer, washes up on a beach in the small town of Twin Peaks. Cue the arrival of eccentric FBI agent Dale Cooper, who uses mystical powers from Tibet as well as first class detective work, to get to the bottom of who killed Laura Palmer.

A great ensemble cast of idiosyncratic characters makes every episode of Twin Peaks a delight. The surreal nature of Twin Peaks may not be to everyone’s taste, but it is a remarkable piece of TV!

Similarity Match: 65%
Twin Peaks shares the same grim discovery of a teenage girl killed in the most horrific of circumstances, but the similarities end there. If you’re looking for a surreal twist on a murder mystery, step into the strange world of Twin Peaks.
