MTV’s hugely popular TV show ‘Teen Wolf’ sees Tyler Posey as Scott McCall leading the pack of cool guys at Beacon Hills high school. Each season sees Scott and his werewolf friends heading to class, but with enemies far worse than the usual high school bully emerging from the shadows to stir up trouble.
This successful show is a great teen drama that uses supernatural elements to highlight the daily struggles that most everyday school kid’s face (who didn’t sometimes feel like a feral beast was inside their body wanting to burst out when they spotted the hot girl across the classroom?)
But if all the werewolf-fuelled action, drama and comedy has left you thirsty for more, you’ll be glad to know there are a wide range of other supernatural dramas ready for your viewing pleasure.
Check out this list of five other shows similar to ‘Teen Wolf’.
‘Buffy’ is a TV series like ‘Teen Wolf’ in that it, too, is based on an original big screen movie. Sarah Michelle Gellar took over the role of The Chosen One from original actress Kristy Swanson when the show began in the late 90s.
Both shows also take well-trodden mythology and turn it around – in ‘Teen Wolf’, the lycans can change without a full moon. In ‘Buffy’, not all demons are evil.
Seven years of mythology (along with spin-off vampire drama, ‘Angel’) saw the protagonist learn to cope with her own supernatural destiny while also trying to graduate high school, protect her loved ones, and guard her heart from a sworn enemy.
‘Buffy’ also presents all the drama in the familiar setting of high school – along with the human challenges that come with it such as sexual awakenings, popularity fears, and exam deadlines.
This story of a werewolf (Russell Tovey), a ghost (Lenora Crichlow) and a vampire (Aidan Turner) living together in Bristol and facing every-day struggles as well as supernatural elements make it one of the more strongly similar tv series like ‘Teen Wolf’ on this list. Not only is friendship a major theme but perfect casting introduced viewers to a group of little known actors who have gone on to achieve great things.
The show produced a loyal fanbase as wild as that found supporting ‘Teen Wolf’ – and there is also a US-Canadian remake that aired between 2011 – 2014 if the UK version isn’t satisfying enough.
Based on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ novel series by L. J. Smith, this show follows teenager Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev) and her romantic struggles with two vampires – Stefan and Damon Salvador (played by Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder respectively). There is plenty of action and passion in this show but Dobrev’s relatable performance in her lead role means she shares all the likeability of ‘Teen Wolf’ star Tyler Posey.
The show is filled with emotional drama as well as light scares so there is plenty to keep viewers hooked. The cast are engaging and sexy which keeps audiences coming back as there is always a risk your favourite character might die…
HBO’s smash dark fantasy drama was based on novel series, ‘The Southern Vampire Mysteries’ by Charlaine Harris and helmed by ‘Six Feet Under’ creator Alan Ball. It famously got viewers hooked and aroused with plenty of raunchy sex scenes.
While ‘Teen Wolf’ is a little more PG in the sex stakes (although it does have a surprising amount of gore), both shows take an honest approach to relationships, sexuality and LGBT issues.
‘True Blood’ is also packed with eye candy – including Anna Paquin, Alexander Skarsgard and Joe Manganiello – as it follows the tales of a sleepy Louisiana town were humans and supernatural creatures co-exist (most of the time).
Need more series like Teen Wolf? Try this long-running fantasy horror drama that fans simply can’t get enough of.
The drama surrounds brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) who make a career out of fighting the forces of darkness – so they are kind of the Abraham Van Helsings of current popular culture.
While ‘Teen Wolf’ prides itself as being part comedy, most laughs found here are down to some of the more wooden acting, sub-par special effects, and occasionally black comedy-style killing of demons.
But with over ten seasons of the Winchester brothers in action, this is as good a show to get stuck into as any.
