5 Shows like One Tree Hill: Once an Outsider, Always an Outsider?

Estranged half brothers Lucas and Nathan are not prepared to let their guard down against each other, but how long can that last? Cue tears, heartbreak, fall outs and love-ins galore and you have a great recipe for an awesome teen drama. If you are looking for more TV shows like One Tree Hill, The OC tells the story on an outsider who reluctantly finds his way in and Gilmore Girls charts the struggles of family, just like Nathan and Lucas.

Brothers in Arms

Hit teen TV show One Tree Hill lets us in on the lives of half-brothers Lucas and Nathan as they struggle to find their own identity, in a world filled with drama at every turn. The show’s writers take time to develop characters, allowing a teenage audience to step into their shoes and identify with some of the issues explored.

The journey from enemies to friends is a long one for Lucas and Nathan, with some truly emotional scenes along the way. If you are in search of other TV series like One Tree Hill, take a look at Gilmore Girls, for a more family orientated drama or 90210, if you want a walk on the wild side.

‘Dawson’s Creek’ (Columbia TriStar, 1998-2003)

Capeside is home to Dawson Leery, a very pensive film geek, and his friends Pacey and Joey. When wild child Jen arrives next door, Dawson and his friends are soon caught up in high school dramas, love triangles and heartache.

Joey is played by the once Mrs Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, and she is defiantly the star of the show, but who will end up stealing her heart? Dawson’s Creek is not scared to tackle major issues, such as mental health and homophobia, but still stays light enough for teenagers to enjoy.

Similarity Match: 95%
Dawson’s Creek is just like One Tree Hill, only with bigger words and more water! Joking aside, One Tree Hill fans will identify with the brooding teenagers of ‘the creek’ and will even get a glimpse of OTH star Chad Michael Murray in a few episodes.

‘The OC’ (Warner Brothers, 2003–2007)

The OC is a serial drama set in the well-off Orange County, California. The show centres around the amiable Cohen family, who take in wild child Ryan Atwood, after he lands himself in trouble with the law and has nowhere else to turn.

Predictably, brooding Ryan catches the eye of the girl next door, Marissa, who helps him on his road to recovery. Ryan’s bad boy ways do not leave him fully, where would the dram be in that? Watch as we see Ryan and his goofy housemate Seth Cohen turn from boys to men.

Similarity Match: 90%
The characters in One Tree Hill are much easier to relate to, with the show exploring familiar issues to the everyday viewers. The OC on the other hand, offers fun storylines, that may seem more farfetched, but are great to watch.

‘90210’ (CBS, 2008-2013)

You may have watched the original 90210 series before One Tree Hill, but now you get a second chance with this airbrushed remake.

The latest 90210 show follows the story of a Kansas City family, The Wilson’s, who move to Beverley Hills and face a battle to be accepted by their community. The Wilson’s adopted son, Tristan, soon gets caught up in the drama of the lives of the rebellious Erin and the troubled Adrianna.

The acting is not the best you will ever see, but the storylines are fun and flirty, making 90210 great Friday night TV.

Similarity Match: 85%
Whilst serious topics are covered in 90210, overall this show is a lot more lighthearted than One Tree Hill and one that you can easily dip in and out of.

‘Gilmore Girls’ (Warner Brothers, 2002-2007)

Gilmore Girls portrays the ups and downs of a mother and daughter relationship, in the small town of Stars Hollow. Young mum Lorelai Gilmore works hard for her daughter, Rory, and the two enjoy a close bond, often leading to people thinking that they are sisters.

Whilst mother and daughter do have a few quarrels now and again, the show sees them grow together, fall in and out of love and learn a few harsh life lessons. The other characters are an eclectic bunch, each adding something a little different to each episode.

Similarity Match: 80%
Like siblings Nathan and Lucas in One Tree Hill, Lorelai and Rory show just how important our families are in our lives. A show that the whole family can watch together, unlike most teen dramas.

‘Gossip Girl’ (17th Street Productions, 2007-2012)

Another series like One Tree Hill is Gossip Girl, a show adapted from the book of the same name, by Cecily von Ziegesar. Gossip Girl follows the scandalous lives of a group of rich kids from New York’s Upper East Side and ‘Lonely Boy’ Dan Humphrey.

Best friends Blair and Serena are continually falling out over boys, clothes and social ranking, much like many teenage girls and bad boy Chuck is always prepared to make his next move. Be prepared for lots of steamy action and, of course, plenty of gossip.

Similarity Match: 75%
Gossip Girl is aimed at older teens and young adults, with plenty of sexy scenes that would make even the naughtiest of boys from One Tree Hill blush.
