5 Shows like Mr. Rogers’ Neighbourhood: The Best of PBS & More

samar2Fred Rogers reached out to his audience with a gentle and caring manner, and covered every topic of concern to children with just the right amount of sentimentality. A model trolley would take us to a neighborhood of Make-Believe, where Mr. Rogers would illustrate his stories with puppet characters. In the spirit of the late Mr. Rogers, this article is an ode to children’s TV! ~ Samar N

UNDERRATED

‘Barney & Friends’ (PBS, 1992 – 2009)

Highly underrated, Barney is everyone’s favourite dancing dinosaur! The theme song is infectious, and the best part is when Barney’s cousin (who is green with purple spots and stomach instead of purple with green spots and stomach) joins in for some dino dancin’ tunes!

MUST-SEE

‘Sesame Street’ (PBS, 1963 – )

Probably the best kids’ show. Sesame Street was intelligently designed and it was based on research that set its cognitive and affective goals. The creators used modelling, repetition and humour to prepare young children for school, especially those from families who had limited access to early-learning educational resources. By including sophisticated humour, cultural references and celebrity guest appearances, they also appealed to the entire family and encouraged family bonding. Sesame Street and its puppets (Big Bird, Elmo, Kermit, Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster, Count Von Count and Oscar the Grouch) is still on air.

UNKNOWN

‘Lamb Chop’s Play-Along’ (PBS, 1992 – 1997)

Host Shari Lewis lives with her puppets Lamb Chop, Hush Puppy and Charlie Horse. Somehow, she plays them all at once and they can all sing along, “This is the song that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friend…”

UNEXPECTED

‘The Muppet Show’ (ITV, 1976 – 1981)

An unexpected choice because it’s aimed at more adult audiences – Jim Henson took his puppet show to the UK after a pilot in the US failed to gain attention. It is styled like a vaudeville show: it features singing, dancing, absurdist humour and parodies. Kermit the Frog leads the gang of Muppet characters and welcomes each episode’s human guest star.
