Idris Elba plays the genius detective John Luther, who is always in search of his next case to crack. Luther explores gritty crimes in the goriest of circumstances, but our hero detective stays determined throughout.
John Luther is not without flaws, as he battles personal demons that cross over into his work. Luther often lets his emotions rule him and can be very unpredictable, which adds to the addictive nature of the series.
If Luther does not scare you off, other TV series like Luther include the excellent Happy Valley and the award-winning Broadchurch.
A tight-knit community is torn apart when a young boy is murdered and the town is besieged by the police. The media is next to descend, hounding the residents of the town and uncovering dark secrets along the way.
Everyone is under suspicion as tension in the town rises and the residents have no way to escape the scrutiny. Olivia Coleman and David Tenant play the detectives in charge of the case, both producing outstanding performances as they struggle to come to terms with this tragic murder.
Despite its name, Happy Valley is a far from a jovial piece of TV. Sergeant Catherine Cawood, played by Sarah Lancashire, is on duty when a kidnapping plot goes horribly wrong and spirals into a web of crime.
The sleepy Yorkshire town that Cawood patrols is rocked by crime after crime. Will the police ever get to the bottom of what is happening? And does Cawood know more than she is letting on?
Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson is assigned one of her toughest cases yet, as she searches for a dangerous murderer who is on the loose in Belfast.
Gillian Anderson is back to her best in this gripping TV show, that will have you hiding behind your sofa as you watch hunter Paul Spector preys on his next victim. Gibson and her team face a race against time, as the killer constantly outwits them and the case becomes darker and darker.
David Simon’s The Wire has won acclaim from all corners of the world, due to his hard hitting drama that lets us in on the dark world of drugs in Baltimore.
From the innocent kids on the street corners to high profile prisoners, The Wire tells the story of everyone that is involved in the drug chain and is often a tough watch. The writing in this show is outstanding and the performances from the actors will have you addicted.
Another series like Luther is The Killing. When the body of 17 year old Rosie Larsen is found in the trunk of a submerged car, Detective Sarah Linden is called in to lead the investigation into her death.
The case takes on lots of twists and turns, with those closest to home unable to free themselves from suspicion. Single parent Sarah, has her own personal issues, which viewers will empathise with. This US version of The Killing closely mirrors the original Danish version that led to the rise in Nordic noir.
