6 Shows like Legend of the Seeker: Here be Magic

Oh hail adventurer! Have you failed your quest in search for great treasure? By chance are you tired and need some quality entertainment? Grab your ale and listen to my words. I shall tell you all about the ‘Legend of the Seeker’. If you would be so kind and lighten your purse for a few gold coins I might even tell you about other series similar to ‘Legend of the Seeker’. Shows such as ‘Xena’ or ‘Merlin’.

These Are the Days of High Adventure

‘Legend of the Seeker’ is your standard fantasy TV series done just good enough for it to stay on air. While fantasy shows generally died off after ‘Xena’ stopped airing, this show came into being and introduced a fantastic storyline riddled with magic, adventuring, intrigue, and anything else you might find in any Dungeons and Dragons session.

Although I personally didn’t like the main character aka The Seeker, the rest of the cast did a mostly pretty good job. No, it’s not the most high quality fantasy series I’ve seen. Then again, it’s hard to not have clichés in this genre and keep the audience entrained at the same time. Luckily we have many interpretations of what a fantasy world should look like in shows like ‘Merlin’ or ‘Hercules’. So relax and listen to my bardic words as I tell you about other TV shows like ‘Legend of the Seeker’.

Shows Similar to ‘Legend of the Seeker’…

‘Xena’ (John Schulian, 1995‐2001)

I can already hear that ‘Xena’ scream Lucy Lawless managed to conjure up with her vocal chords. ‘Xena’ is a fantasy show that derived from ‘Hercules’ and managed to get a bigger audience. The show follows the epic adventures of Xena the warrior princess and her companion Gabrielle on their quest to help people, slay monster and even gods.

In a way the show is, as ‘Herucles’, cheesy. However, it produced a leading character which was not only a female warrior but an interesting one at that with a lot of depth. Probably the next most memorable characters in the show were Aries, played by the late Kevin Smith, who was a great villain. There are some rumors of a ‘Xena’ reboot or continuation. It will either have most of the original crew or a completely new crew that is aimed more at the younger generations.

Similarity Match: 85%
Compared to ‘Legend of the Seeker’, ‘Xena’ is definitely cheesier and expect more standalone episodes. However, ‘Legend of the Seeker’ can hardly match the classic status that ‘Xena’ has.

‘Merlin’ (Johnny Caps, Julian Jones, 2008‐2012)

We all know the story of King Arthur and Excalibur, but do we know the story of his wizard Merlin? ‘Merlin‘ follows the adventures of a young Merlin still honing his magical skills in a time when magic was prohibited in Camelot. Soon enough Merlin sneaks his way into prince Arthurs (as he was young too thus a prince and not a king) life by becoming his helper and saving him from certain death more times than he can count. Of course, Arthur is completely unaware of Merlin’s abilities.

The big baddy in the series is Morgana which just so happens to be Arthur’s sister. Might I say that I loved her character? Not only is she diabolic and intelligently written, but I’m just going to go out and say that she is a sight for sore eyes.

What makes ‘Merlin’ stand out from ‘Legend of the Seeker’ is that it is based on a popular folk tale. This also means that there is no precise way to go with the story giving the creators a lot of leeway. Legend of the Seeker on the other hand is based on a book series meaning it should at least follow some plot points.

In comparison Merlin delivers a show for the younger audience but still holds a quite high quality. I would also say that the acting is better and you actually get see a dragon! I guess dragons are popular these days.

Similarity Match: 85%
Merlin delivers a story that is catered more for the younger audience while Legend of the Seeker is aimed at the general public. In any case, I suggest you check out both shows.

‘Hercules: The Legendry Journeys’ (Christian Williams, 1995‐1999)

The first thought that comes to mind when I try to remember Hercules is a really nice Conan without a proper sword. ‘Hercules: The Legendary Journeys’ had various interesting stories which usually involved gods and mythical beings. He usually solved problems with you guessed it, brute strength and kindness.

Compared to ‘Legend of the Seeker’, expect more corniness and comic relief. This is due to the fact that the show was made in the 90’s. The show did have an overarching storyline, but most episodes were standalone with a bit of background story. The big baddy of the show is his step‐ mother Hera that wants to kill him to spite Zeus.

For its time thought, the show is a really fun watch. My suggestion would be to watch while doing something else. I never found it captivating, but it is fun nonetheless.

Similarity Match: 80%
‘Hercules’ is just goofy, but it was the 90’s so it’s forgiven but a TV series like ‘Legend of the Seeker’ cannot really be forgiven for the same characteristic.

‘Atlantis’ (Johnny Caps, Julian Murphy, 2013‐2015)

I’ve felt as if Atlantis is yet another way for the studio to make fast cash on a completely average show. Seeing as the show lasted for two seasons I’m not really that surprised. I actually feel sorry for the set creators and special effects theme since they did a really solid job. However, the script is just horrible. The story is full of plot holes and I really can’t recommend it. Still, if all you are looking for is sword and sorcery fun, give it a go.

The show centers around Jason, a 20th century man that went through time and got washed up on the shores of Atlantis. From there the story pretty much revolves around his destiny. What I found most interesting though is that they never really used the most obvious plot device, that he is a 20th century man in ancient times. ‘Legend of the Seeker’ on the other hand uses the plot devices with logic, no matter how corny they are.

Similarity Match: 80%
‘Atlantis’ is defiantly the lowest ranking show on this list. Compared to ‘Legend of the Seeker’, it lacks in story driven elements, dialogue and the actors acting abilities. If you watched all the other shows on the list, give this one a try.

If You Like ‘Legend of the Seeker’, You Will Like…

If you still would like to see fantasy shows that hold a more serious tone, you might like the ones underneath. Although, light on fantasy, the themes are much darker.

‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ (David S. Goyer, 2013‐ )

‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ takes a similar road that ‘Merlin’ does in terms of inspiration. It doesn’t base its show on legend but on a historical figure, Leonardo Da Vinci. Although I have to emphasize the word ‘based’ as that is the only connection to the historical Leonardo Da Vicni. Young Leonardo is portrayed more of as a genius adventurer rather than an inventor.

Well this is probably due to the fact that it wouldn’t be much of a show if we were to see him think, sleep and discover stuff. There are fantastic elements engulfed in mystic and mystery. Makes the viewer think if there is actual magic involved all the time or just tricks that were seen as magic.

Compared to ‘Legend of the Seeker’, this show is a serious drama with a higher production value. There are some explicit sexual and violent elements but all in good measure. I would even go out and say that this show is more intelligently written and produced.

Although ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ has a higher production value, I would say that it is focused a lot more on mystery than ‘Legend of the Seeker’. Also, the production value, story and acting is way better.

‘Game of Thrones’ (David Benioff, 2011‐ )

If you haven’t heard of ‘Game of Thrones’ you either had memory loss for the last five years or were living under a rock. Either that or you just weren’t paying attention to popular media. ‘Game of Thrones’ is a serial based on the popular fantasy novel series „A Song of Ice and Fire“ by George R. R. Martin. The world of Westeros in the show is a savage place. It would be considered weird if you saw an episode that didn’t have at least one sex scene and/or death scene.

Some criticize the creators that there is a needlessly high amount of sex scenes in the serial that do not push the story forward enough. There is also a lot of graphic violence (link is a spoiler) that may disturb younger audiences.

Other than the points mentioned above, the serial is probably the best fantasy serial out there at the moment. ‘Legend of the Seeker’ is way off its game against ‘Game of Thrones’.

Compared to ‘Legend of the Seeker’, ‘Game of Thrones’ is a completely different ballgame that is aimed for a different audience that wants a more gritty and dark atmosphere in their fantasy series.
