5 Shows like Jerseylicious: Tripping The Light Tan-tastic

Nicola Griffiths itcherIf you’re on the hunt for a gloriously trashy TV series like ‘Jerseylicious’ then you should definitely check out ‘The Real Housewives of New Jersey’, ‘Mob Wives’ and ‘Jersey Shore’, along with a couple of UK gems. ~ Nicola Griffiths

Jersey? Sure!

Following the lives of the employees of The Gatsby Salon in Green Brook Township, New Jersey, ‘Jerseylicious’ was nothing if not dramatic. Boasting no-holds barred fights, break-ups, make-ups (and make overs) all played out with their inimitable Jersey edge, this three-year roller coaster was certainly one hell of a ride.

Of course the drama didn’t simply end on screen either, with some the show’s cast never straying too far from controversy. The stars of these TV shows like ‘Jerseylicious’ are also no strangers to fake tans and tantrums, but don’t let the glitzy exterior fool you – some of the feuds in these shows would have the families of ‘Game of Thrones’ running for the hills!

Shows Similar to ‘Jerseylicious’…

‘The Real Housewives of New Jersey’ (Bravo, 2009-present)

‘The Real Housewives of New Jersey’ is a TV series like ‘Jerseylicious’ as far as reality TV is concerned. In fact, it is bigger, bolder and brasher than most reality TV shows on air. With in-fighting and drama aplenty, this particular offshoot of the ‘Real Housewives’ brand hit the headlines across the world when Teresa and Giuseppe “Joe” Giudice were arrested and sentenced to jail time for bankruptcy, mail, and wire fraud.

Not ones to shy away from a cracking story, filming for the series continued with the show’s Bravo TV crew being present to greet Teresa on her release. Across the franchise, there has been more than enough highs and lows to keep fans hooked, but deep down, we all know New Jersey is where it’s really at.

Similarity Match: 90%
It seems odd to describe ‘The Real Housewives of New Jersey’ as ‘grown-up’ in comparison to ‘Jerseylicious’, but if you’re into good old-fashioned family feuds with a little jail time thrown in for good measure, then you will feel right at home.

‘Mob Wives’ (VH1, 2011-2013)

Another TV show like ‘Jerseylicious’ that certainly knows how to grab headlines is ‘Mob Wives’. The show certainly does not hold any punches back and it seems neither do the cast members either!

The subject matter has always been a contentious one, with the show’s detractors claiming it relies upon outdated stereotypes of the Italian-American community to garner ratings. Whatever your opinion, there is no denying that ‘Mob Wives’ is explosive television, be that for better or worse.

Similarity Match: 80%
‘Mob Wives’ definitely has an edge that is missing from ‘Jerseylicious’, but maybe looking on the fluffier side of life isn’t such a bad thing.

‘Jersey Shore’ (MTV, 2009-2012)

If you’re looking for a TV series like ‘Jerseylicious’ then where better to look to where it all began: ‘Jersey Shore’ burst onto our screens in 2009, promising sun, sex and of course, Snooki.

With so many moments worth a mention from this (at times) ridiculous, yet always frustratingly endearing gang of guidos and guidettes, it’d be best to sit back, grab yourself a ‘Ron Ron Juice’ and go right back to the start.

Similarity Match: 75%
More chaotic than ‘Jerseylicious’, ‘Jersey Shore’ shows that the cast can certainly play hard, but I’m not sure how well they would cope with a shift at The Gatsby.

If You Like ‘Jerseylicious’, You Will Like…

From the East Coast of the US of A, we head over to the UK to show that we can do fake tans and bling just as well as everybody else, thankyouverymuch. With one supposedly ‘reality’ TV show, and another one of the most outrageous drama series ever to have graced the screens, these shows are a world away in distance, but in terms of content, they’re pretty much neighbours.

‘The Only Way Is Essex’ (ITV, 2010-present)

It may have become easy to scoff at ‘The Only Way Is Essex’, the show that introduced the concept of the ‘vajazzle’ to an unsuspecting world, but not only has the show become embedded in the national psyche, it has also gone on to win a BAFTA.

Full of glitz and glam, ‘TOWIE’ has come to represent the concept of ‘structured reality’, something that sits half way between a scripted soap opera and a candid reality TV show.

It is a TV show like ‘Jerseylicious’ in that the cast make no bones about being proud of where they are from, and their antics and love triangles have kept audiences entertained for 16 whole series to date. (Un)fortunately, it shows no signs of slowing down.

‘The Only Way Is Essex’ shows that like ‘Jerseylicious’, being proud of where you are from is certainly no bad thing, but perhaps the ‘TOWIE’ gang aren’t as divisive as their New Jersey counterparts.

‘Footballers Wives’ (ITV, 2002-2006)

Referring to ‘Footballers Wives’ as a drama has never been strictly accurate, as anyone who remembers it from back in the day will no doubt recant how inherently silly the whole thing was.

With bitter rivalries, shocking plot twists and enough tackiness to make the likes of ‘Dallas’ look positively quaint, it’s the clashes between the female leads that kept viewers on the edge of their seats, as you often had quite literally no idea how far each of them would go to come out on top.

It’s a TV show like ‘Jerseylicious’ in that the characters are all larger than life, and certainly take any perceived slight VERY seriously.

‘Footballers Wives’ takes the glitz of ‘Jerseylicious’ and with the help of some, ahem, rather adventurous writers, offers viewers a front row seat into the bold and brash world of footballers.

Tonight I’m gonna take that ride, across the river to the Jersey side.

If you’re looking for more TV shows like ‘Jerseylicious’ then perhaps the rest of the ‘Real Housewives’ locations might tickle your fancy. Or if you like what you saw from the UK, there is always ‘Made In Chelsea’ for a juicy insight into how the other half live, or ‘Geordie Shore’ if you’d prefer to get ‘mortal’.
