5 Shows like Grimm: The Fairytale Is Over

Remember being a little scared by the fairy tales you read when you were a child? Well, prepare to be even more scared when you delve into the dark world of ‘Grimm’. Likewise, ‘Supernatural’ is packed full of weird and wonderful creatures and ‘Once Upon a Time’ offers more fairy tales with a freaky twist.

Tales of the Unexpected

Police detective, Nick Burkhardt, is used to investigating gory crimes, but nothing prepares him for the sudden visions of people morphing into monsters. Scared and unaware what’s happening, it’s soon revealed that his supernatural powers run in the family and he must carry on his family’s fight against evil.

Nick meets various creepy characters throughout his journey, picking up an ally along the way in the form of a reformed ‘Big Bad Wolf’.

The world of the supernatural mixes with his detective work as Nick begins to see that there is more to some criminals than meets the eye.

If you love this show, take a look at my recommendations of TV shows like ‘Grimm’.

‘Supernatural’ (Warner Brothers, 2005-)

Brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, follow one of the most unusual of career paths when they train to be ghost hunters. They decide on this alternative lifestyle as they want to follow in the footsteps of their father, who took it upon himself to kill the demons that murdered his wife.

On their journey, the brothers discover that they themselves have special powers, perhaps given to them for a larger purpose. How will they move ahead with their newfound powers?

If you like ‘Grimm’ for the sheer ‘freak out’ factor, then ‘Supernatural’ will leave your eyes wind open and your hands over your mouth.

‘Once Upon a Time’ (Kitsis/Horrowitz, 2011-)

Emma Swan wants nothing more than a happy ending, but it does not look like she’s going to get it anytime soon. Things start to look up for Emma when she’s reunited with her estranged son, Henry, who’s looking for her help.

Henry believes that Emma is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming – who sent her away from the Enchanted Forest to be protected from a curse that was enacted by the Evil Queen. Sounds crazy, right? Well, you need to watch and find out if young Henry is right.

Like ‘Grimm’, the storylines in ‘Once Upon a Time’ are very farfetched, but very fun. This show is a lot more lighthearted than ‘Grimm’, although you might meet a few scary characters along the way.

‘The Originals’ (Bonanza Productions, 2013-)

Another series like ‘Grimm’ is ‘The Originals’. ‘The Originals’ is a spin-off of The Vampire Dairies and is set in New Orleans. The Mikaelson siblings are the stars of the show, who have just returned to their home city after they were previously forced to flee from their vengeful father.

When they left the city, the vampire Marcel jumped right in to take charge, but Klaus is determined to regain control of the city with his sister, Rebekah, and his brother, Elijah.

Forget the teeny bopper image that most vampire shows leave you with, the vampires in ‘The Originals’ mean business. This show offers an alternative perspective on exactly the type of bad guys that Nick Burkhardt is trying to defeat.

‘Sleepy Hollow’ (Sketch Films, 2013-)

Ichabod Crane is resurrected two and a half centuries later and gets tangled up with ‘Sleepy Hollow’ police Lieutenant, Abbie Mills.

Crane and Abbie must unravel a mystery that is centuries old and they soon find themselves working together to stop the headless horseman, who’s the fourth horsemen of the Apocalypse. The TV series is based on the 1999 film starring Johnny Depp.

Similarity Match: 75%
‘Sleepy Hollow’ is a weird and wonderful town that would fit right into a ‘Grimm’ fairy tale. The show is filled with mysterious story lines rather than outright scare stories and is lots of fun to watch.

***
‘Being Human’ (Touchpaper Television, 2008-2013)

Only on TV would you find a werewolf, a vampire, and a ghost sharing a flat together in modern day Britain. The show is a mixture of a typical flat share TV show – where a group of oddball characters come together – and a horror story.

The original series was aired in the UK, but a US series has since launched due to the popularity of the show. Seemingly, werewolves and vampires arguing over who drank the last of the milk is great TV.

Similarity Match: 70%
‘Being Human’ takes a fun look at supernatural beings, rather than wanting to be taken seriously like ‘Grimm’, but you still get your freaky fix.
