5 Shows like Grey’s Anatomy: Just What the Doctor Ordered

When it comes to life saving operations and relationship saving escapades, there is no black and white just various shades of grey. The students, doctors and patients of Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital battle to save lives and save each other in this gritty hospital drama. If you are looking for more TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice sees Addison Montgomery move to her own practice and ER offers traditional medical based drama.

Life Can Change in a Heartbeat

Grey’s Anatomy is a drama centred on the personal and professional lives of a group of surgical interns and their superiors. Meredith Grey is the central character in this high-flying medical drama, who we see embroiled in the most intimate of personal battles as well as her workplace dramas.

There is not a whole lot of medical action in the show despite it being set in a hospital, but there is plenty of blood spilled between various characters as relationships become very complicated. If you are looking for more medical drama, here are my top 5 suggestions for TV series like Grey’s Anatomy.

‘Private Practice’ (Shondaland, 2007-2013)

Private Practice is a spin-off from Grey’s Anatomy, focusing on the life of neonatal surgeon Addison Montgomery. Addison must focus on her new life and job when she moves to another city.

There are plenty of ups and downs, particularly when it comes to personal relationships. Grey’s Anatomy fans may not like the change of pace of this show, but it is a series you can easily dip in and out of.

Similarity Match: 95%
The pace is slowed down a lot in Private Practice and Grey’s Anatomy fans may miss the large cast they have become accustomed to, but the relationship drama does not change, in fact, it gets more complicated.

‘ER’ (Constant C Productions, 1994-2009)

ER is one of the most iconic hospital dramas to hit our TV screens and, if you have not watched it yet you have a lot of catching up to do. The show launched the careers of many big name acyors, like George Clooney and Julianna Margulies and also featured cameos from movie stars.

Set in a fast paced Chicago hospital, ER delves into the personal lives of the doctors and nurses and still has time to tell great patient stories each episode.

Similarity Match: 90%
If you like your hospital drama to be more hands on, ER does focus on patients as well as the private lives of the staff, something Grey’s Anatomy lacks at times.

‘Nip/Tuck’ (Hands Down Productions, 2003-2010)

Another series like Grey’s Anatomy is Nip/Tuck. The central characters of Nip/Tuck are two plastic surgeons striving to keep their business running whilst facing personal problems and criminal investigations.

Dr. Sean McNamara and Dr. Christian Troy are lifelong friends who want to make their business succeed, despite being very different. Christian is a self-confessed playboy whilst Sean is an honest family man, which makes for lots of interesting episodes as the two struggle to agree with one and other.

Similarity Match: 85%
Like Grey’s Anatomy, Nip/tuck does focus on the lives of the doctors more than the patients, but there are some graphic scenes of plastic surgery procedures for those wanting to be put off their dinner.

‘House M.D.’ (Heel and Toe Productions, 2004-2012)

Dr Gregory House is an antisocial doctor who specialises in diagnostic medicine and is at his best when solving the most puzzling of medical cases. House struggles to get on with anybody at the hospital and creates friction wherever he goes.

The fact that he is a genius is the only thing that keeps him in his job; if it was left down to his bedside manner he would be long gone. Hugh Laurie is surprisingly perfect in a role that is a far cry from his comedy days.

Similarity Match: 80%
House generally focuses on the life of one doctor, rather than those of an ensemble cast, but creates enough drama to fill a whole hospital with his quick witted tongue.

‘Bones’ (Far Field Productions, 2005-)

A forensic anthropologist and an FBI agent come together to solve some of the most complicated crimes. Dr. Temperence Brennan plays the socially awkward anthropologist who struggles to get along both personally and professionally with cocky FBI agent Seeley Booth.

The show features some intriguing story lines and it is fun to see the unlikely crime fighting duo having to put their personal differences aside for the greater good.

Similarity Match: 75%
Fans of detective shows and medical drama will love this show as it features both. There is a little less personal drama in Bones, but it has enough to satisfy a romantic streak.
