‘Every Witch Way’ follows high-school student Emma Alonso who moves to Miami with her father. However she soon figures that she’s not just a regular teenage girl but she is actually a witch, and a very powerful one at that. TV shows like ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’, ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ and ‘That’s so Raven’ also follow the teenage girls learning to cope with their magical powers.

Panthers, Popularity and Powers!

After moving to Miami, Emma soon learns that she is not only a witch but she is the ‘Chosen One’. She must deal with keeping the Panthers – the school’s popular girls – at bay, learn to handle her powers and figure out her love life. ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ (Disney-ABC Domestic Television, 2007-2012)

‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ focuses on the Russo family, in particularly on Alex Russo, a teenage girl who is in competition with two of her brothers – Justin and Max – in order to win sole custody of the family powers and become the family wizard.

Similarity Match: 90%
Unlike ‘Every Witch Way’ Alex and her family have always known about their powers, however ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ follows similar themes such as teenage angst, dealing with magical powers and high-school drama.

‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ (Viacom Productions, 1996-2003)

Sabrina Spellman is a teenaged girl living out her life until she is told by her aunts, Hilda and Zelda that she’s a witch! ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ is sure to make you laugh with the comical antics of Sabrina and her pet cat Salem, who just so happens to be able to talk. The magic is non-stop!

As like ‘Every Witch Way’ Sabrina is unaware of her powers at first however she attends a school full of humans whereas Emma attends a special school purely for witches ensuring they have to deal with the high school drama in different ways.

‘That’s so Raven’ (Disney Channel Original Productions, 2003-2007)

Raven Baxter is a teenager with the sight. She draws upon her psychic powers and creativity, as well as various disguises to help herself get out of comical situations. She must also deal with her younger brother who seems to antagonise her throughout the series.

Similarity Match: 80%
Raven may not have the magical powers of a witch as Emma does in ‘Every Witch Way’ but she has to cope with circumstances in her life that are very similar to Emma’s regarding high-school, friends and boys!

If You Like ‘Every Witch Way’, You Will Like…

If you want series similar to ‘Every Witch Way’ but instead of some light-hearted fun, you want to watch something with a bit more intensity and darkness then ‘Charmed’ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ are for you!

‘Charmed’ (Paramount Television, 1998-2006)

Prue, Piper and Phoebe and the three Halliwell sisters who learn that they are the most powerful witches to be known of – ‘The Charmed Ones’. Each sister has their own special power that they must use to ward off evil.

The similarity between Emma being the ‘Chosen One’ and the Halliwell sisters being the ‘Charmed Ones’ is uncanny however ‘Charmed’ does follow a more dark route than ‘Every Witch Way’.

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ (20th Century Fox Television, 1997-2003)

Buffy Summers moves to Sunnydale hoping to escape her Slayer duties. However her plans are thwarted when her new watcher – Rupert Giles – reminds her of evil’s prevalence. She attends Sunnydale High which is actually built on top of portal to demon dimensions. She must tackle the evil that is prevalent within her community whilst facing the usual human drama of day-to-day life.

Vampires and slayers may seem like a far cry from witches however the two worlds of Emma and Buffy seem relatively similar with the good vs evil concept.

One thing that all of these shows have in common is that the leading ladies are strong and powerful within their own rights. These can range from teenaged girls to young women, however they’re all on their own special quests to make the world a better place.
