6 Shows like Duck Dynasty: Alternative American Reality Series

Phil Robertson had a wonderful idea when he created and patented his duck call whistle. Who knew that this tiny invention would make the Robertson family millionaires and hosts of their own TV show? This series chronicles the hilarious antics of the Robertson clan as they work on expanding the family business and trying to get along! Offering a laugh a minute, TV shows like ‘Duck Dynasty’ and ‘Impractical Jokers’ offer us the chance to see grown men acting like children.

It’s All a Bit Quackers…

Featuring some of the unlikeliest of reality stars, it’s no wonder that so many people tune into new and old episodes of ‘Duck Dynasty’. This witty critique of the show highlights exactly why this family has earned a place in our hearts.

Even if you’re not into TV series like ‘Duck Dynasty’, which offer a glimpse into the lives of critter-hunting men-of-the-woods, anything that steers away from the reams of identical reality shows about rich, pretty, young girls has to be worth a watch!

Shows Similar to ‘Duck Dynasty’…

‘Finding Bigfoot’ (Animal Planet, 2011- )

If you’re intrigued by the idea of a whole bunch of men heading out into the wilderness to hunt a creature down, then ‘Finding Bigfoot’ is the one for you.

This show is based around the notion that Bigfoot exists – for these self-proclaimed ‘squatchers’, this fact is never called into question. If you want to develop your understanding of what Bigfoot is, or indeed how to find one, then tune into this.

A simple added bonus is hearing a whole range of Bigfoot or ‘squatch’ calls being made and argued over by a very serious manner by this group of hunters – this turns me into a hysterical laughing banshee, it’s just too good!

Similarity Match: 90%
This team of scientists, much like the Robertsons, love nothing more than to be outside hunting their favourite animal, but they have a much more fractured relationship.

‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’ (TLC, 2012- )

Alana Thompson, aka ‘Honey Boo Boo’ is the beauty pageant child star of a family hailing from McIntyre, Georgia. A typically Southern family, the Thompsons support Honey Boo Boo in everything she wants, even if it’s simply an endless supply of chicken nuggets.

Boo and her ‘Mama’ have a powerful bond, and despite their untraditional looks, this reality duo have captured our attention and won’t seem to let go – this article explains why.

So many of us connect with Honey Boo Boo on a deep (well, sort of) emotional level – her endless self-confidence and love for carbs are exactly what us girls want and need!

Similarity Match: 85%
This family-orientated reality show will always remind us of the values of the Robertsons, whilst the focus on beauty means we’re far away from the wilderness.

‘Lizard Lick Towing’ (TruTV, 2011-2014)

Just like Phil and Kay, the powerhouse team behind the Robertsons’ company on ‘Duck Dynasty’, Ronnie and Amy Shirley of ‘Lizard Lick Towing’ are not a pair you would want to mess with. Having started their company way back in 1998, it soon grew to be a massive business, earning them their livelihoods.

We follow the lives of the pair and some of their employees alongside their business ventures. As such, we know that after a fight with Amy, Ronnie won’t exactly be forgiving to any angst-filled repossession victims, and often, a physical fight may even break out.

If you’re a bit of a drama-lover, this is such a fabulous, easy watch!

Similarity Match: 80%
If you want to understand how a family manages a business and still gets on, then both ‘Duck Dynasty’ and ‘Lizard Lick Towing’ are the ones for you. But if you want something a little more feisty, then ‘Lizard Lick Towing’ is a must-see.

‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’ (A&E, 2004-2012)

Hunting is once more the epicentre of another hit American TV series, but this time it’s people that are the prey. Daug, or ‘Dog’ and his family make a living by capturing wanted men and women, often having to resort to underhanded tactics to do so.

This family is known for its on and off-screen friction, so rest assured that no episode is drama-free. When Dog gets a sniff of another alpha male trying to get in on his territory, he will tear them to shreds.

Partly terrifying and partly loveable, you won’t be able to peel your eyes away from this action-packed show.

Similarity Match: 80%
Just like the Robertsons, Dog and his family have a keen sense of right and wrong. The key difference? Each ‘Duck Dynasty’ episode ends with the peaceful family in prayer over a meal, whilst ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’ is more likely to end in a fist fight!

If You Like ‘Duck Dynasty’, You Will Like…

I’ve shown you some of the shows that, like ‘Duck Dynasty’, focus on a family-oriented reality TV way of life, with a little bit of hunting and money-making thrown in.

Now, however, we’re going to look a bit wider at some more shows ‘Duck Dynasty’ may remind you of .

‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ (E!, 2007- )

Kimye are pretty much a household name now, especially after naming their child North West (who does that?).

‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ allows fans a glimpse into the lives of the entire Kardashian family. Viewers get to experience their joy, feuds and triumphs all in truly dramatic Kardashian style.

Although they’re much more high-end than the rustic Robertsons, you’re guaranteed to fall a little bit in love with the family and their exploits.

Kim, Khloe, Kendall and Kylie – the four musketeers of the Kardashian family keep us entertained with their daily lives and interactions with other family members, just like Willie, Si and the rest of the Robertson gang.

‘Impractical Jokers’ (TruTV, 2011- )

The Robertson men of ‘Duck Dynasty’ are huge fans of playing the odd prank on one another, and Q, Murr, Joe and Sal of ‘Impractical Jokers’ are no different. These four best friends love nothing better than to humiliate one another – and what better way to do it than with some good, old-fashioned pranks and dares?

With a camera at the ready, the guys create challenges at the beginning of each episode for each other to undertake.

These men love to prank just like the Robertson men, but they do so in a much more modern (and socially uncomfortable!) manner.

Duck Whistles Goodbye

Let’s face it: we hope ‘Duck Dynasty’ never leaves us for good (at least, we’ll always have reruns). From family feuds to hilarious pranks, ‘Duck Dynasty’ offers us everything we look for in an American reality show. Plus, we get a glimpse into life in the wilderness as an added bonus!
