‘Call the Midwife’ chronicles the lives of a group of midwives living in East London in the late 1950s to early 1960s. Funny woman Miranda Hart takes off her comedy hat and pops on a nurses outfit as she helps women from all walks of life bring new lives into the world.

The Bletchley Circle follows a group of four women who worked at the wartime code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, who reunite to track down a serial killer. The group is brought back together by former code-breaker Susan who notices a pattern developing when a series of girls are murdered in 1950s London. Millie, Lucy, and Jean join Susan and embark on solving the ultimate mystery.
‘Land Girls’ tells the story of the lives and loves and highs of four members of the Women’s Land Army who are working at the Hoxley Estate during World War II. Land girls played such an important role during the war which younger generations do not necessarily learn about. The show does contain a lot of romance, but that does not detract from the serious work that the girls do whilst men are away at war.
Another series like Call the Midwife is Lark Rise to Candleford. The show is an adaptation of Flora Thompson’s novel “Lark Rise To Candleford,” set in 19 century Oxfordshire. We meet a young girl, Laura Timmins, as she moves to her local market town to begin an apprenticeship as a postmistress. Watch Laura as she gets used to living away from home and gets to grips with the feisty postmistress Dorcas Lane.
Dr. Martin Ellingham escapes the hustle and bustle of the city when he moves to the small Cornish town of Portwenn. Far from enjoying the friendly community spirit Dr Ellingham is as grumpy as they come and certainly does not have the bedside manner that the locals are accustomed to.
Giving up a high-flying career as a London surgeon to move to a sleepy GP surgery, is clearly a difficult transition for Martin. We soon realise the reason for his big move and, as he gets to know local school headmistress Louise Glasson more, we see his cold exterior start to melt slightly.
‘Holby City’ is a long-running BBC show that is a spin-off from household favourite Casualty. We see the doctors and nurses of Holby City General hospital treat new patients during each episode, with backgrounds given on all of the patients that enter the hospital.
To liven things up a bit for viewers, Holby City also focuses on the private lives of the people who work at the hospital, with plenty of gossip that will leave you excited for the next instalment.
