6 Shows like Blue Mountain State: Fun in High School & College

There is a certain genre known as high school or college comedies. Though movies like ‘American Pie’ made the genre popular, not a lot of shows were made on the subject. A show like ‘Blue Mountain State’ or ‘The Inbetweeners’ could give that chuckle you’ve been waiting for.

Ten, Twenty Two, Hut, Hut!

We often like to recall the “good ol’ days” of high school or college where we did some seemingly stupid but fun stunts. That’s exactly where ‘Blue Mountain State’ puts us if we would only multiply the fun factor by ten while removing the parts about studying and the stress of passing exams. ‘Blue Mountain State’ centers around three freshmen that got into college by playing football. Now they have to tackle (see what I did there) problems such as constant pressure for high scores during their games, keeping their grades up, keeping their love life in check and of course, party as hard as possible.

Unfortunately, ‘Blue Mountain State’ was cut short with only two seasons. That’s why I’ve prepared a list of TV shows like ‘Blue Mountain State’ such as ‘Community’ or ‘Glory Daze’ that could rival their football team.

Shows Similar to ‘Blue Mountain State’…

‘Glory Daze’ (Walt Becker, Michael Lesiuer, 2010-2011)

‘Glory Daze’ is that show that should have stayed on air but for some reason its ratings never were that high. I’m guessing it was a bad time slot. These things tend to happen. Well, at least we got one season of this great college comedy set in the 80s.

The protagonists are all freshmen that are trying to get into a frat house. Comedy ensues when the frat requires them to do a lot of nonsensical but really funny and probably stupid things. The show is a sort of sitcom but episodes do have an overarching storyline which has never been fully realized.

Similarity Match: 90%
A show that follows the misadventures of students during their college life is pretty similar to what ‘Blue Mountain State’ and ‘Glory Daze’ have in common. The only difference is that one is about the jocks while the other is about plain freshmen.

‘Community’ (Dan Harmon, 2009-2015)

‘Community’ has been become a cult classic and was on air purely because of the massive fan responses when its cancelation was announced. The show focuses on a group of people of different ages that attend the one of the worst colleges in America, Greendale.

Their adventures become just plain weird at some point and really start to deviate from the college atmosphere. They do this by breaking the 4th wall and usually getting carried away with bizarre scenarios. Nevertheless, the show is phenomenal and has a lot of laugh out loud humor. Also, you get too see Chevy Chase being a world class douchebag.

Similarity Match: 80%
If you are looking for a comedy show that doesn’t have most of its jokes based on sex or alcohol you just might like ‘Community’. It is a series similar to ‘Blue Mountain State’ in its high quality approach to comedy, but how they execute the comedy is different.

‘the Inbetweeners’ (Ben Palmer, 2008-2010)

If you fancy a bit of British humor, ‘the Inbetweeners’ is for you. It follows the misadventures of a group of teens during their high school years. There is believably silly dialogue and believably profound, really awkward situations and all the hardships of high school. In fact, the amount of awkwardness in the show can even match that of the Office. At times, it becomes painful to watch.

The show later got two movies which were accepted with mixed reviews. Still, if you enjoy a couple of teenagers ramble on about how to get laid, this show could give you quite a laugh.

Similarity Match: 75%
Although both shows share a similar topic of a group of people during their education, the set up and style of humor is different yet still of high quality.

‘Boy Meets World’ (Jeff Mccraken, 1993-2000)

Who doesn’t remember Corry and Topanga, or Mr. Feeny?

‘Boy Meets World’ centers on Corry Mathews, a teenager trying to figure out how the world works while working out problems with his love life and in school. Keep in mind thought that this is a 90’s sitcom. You should expect a lot laugh tracks, cheesy jokes and obvious humor.

The show is more of a light comedy without some of the more graphic scenes or explicit dialogue. However, it is well suited for the younger audience.

Similarity Match: 70%
Other than it is a show based on growing up and education, the humor is vastly different from ‘Blue Mountain State’. If you think ‘Blue Mountain State’ is for you, this show is for your little brother or sister.

If You Like ‘Blue Mountain State’, You Will Like…

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ (Daniel J. Goor, Michael Schur, 2013-)

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ is not a show based in college or any kind of education system for that matter, but its humor is similar to that you could see in ‘Blue Mountain State’. The show follows the police squad of the Nine-Nine police force. It is filmed as a mockumentary but without interviews. This is a rare show that genuinely makes laugh out loud. What is best is that it has a lot of episodes and is still airing.

If you like witty and at times juvenile humor mixed with great timing, this is the show for you. It’s like watching the team from ‘Blue Mountain State’ get jobs in law enforcement.

‘Silicon Valley’ (John Altschuler, Mike Judge, 2014- )

In a time when an IT enthusiast can become a millionaire overnight and lose that same million in a blink of an eye, you just can’t happen to think there could be a lot of good stories in there. Enter ‘Silicon Valley’. The show follows a group of programmers that stumbled upon a way to reduce package size when transferring data over the internet. This means that the movie you download will just be a couple of megabytes big while still having all of its quality intact. Of course, the programmers are not really social and get stuck in various situations due to their awkward behavior.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people who like ‘Blue Mountain State’ really love ‘Silicon Valley’ although the two shows have almost nothing in common, except a great sense of humor.

Party All Night, Study Never!

Everybody that has gone to high school or college knows that a lot of time is actually spent on studying and not partying all the time. Luckily, we’ve got a TV series like ‘Blue Mountain State’ that makes us remember the fun times we had or are having.

You know what? They were or are fun because of the studying. What’s better than going to a party right after you passed that big exam? We wouldn’t appreciate the partying as much if we didn’t struggle. If these shows are not your cup of tea, you might like our list of teens surviving high school.
