5 Shows like Adventure Time: Not Just for Kids

If TV teaches you anything, it is to not take things at face value. Adventure Time may appear just to be about a boy with a best friend for a dog living in a magical kingdom, but there are many underlying messages in the show that teach us a lot about life. If you are looking for more TV shows like Adventure Time, I recommend The Regular Show and Steven Universe for starters.

It’s Time for an Adventure

A human boy named Finn and his best friend Jake the Dog, protect the citizens of the Land of Ooo from foes of various shapes and sizes. The show is very silly, but very clever and it appeals to all ages, not just kids.

Adventure Time has gained cult status and is probably watched by more adults than children, due to its quick witted comedy and oddball characters that adults can relate. If you are looking for more fun animated TV shows, here are my top 5 suggestions for TV series like Adventure Time.

‘Regular Show’ (Cartoon Network, 2009-)

The Regular Show follows two groundskeepers, a six-foot-tall blue jay named Mordecai and Rigby the raccoon on their adventures as they try to entertain themselves.

The mundane jobs that they have to carry out bore them to tears, so they are constantly trying to inject some fun into their lives, much to the audience’s pleasure.

Similarity Match: 95%
Adventure Time and The Regular Show are very similar, with cutesy goofball characters that are both fun and bittersweet.

‘Steven Universe’ (Cartoon Network, 2013-)

Steven Universe is a young boy who takes his mother’s place in a group of gemstone-based beings, and must learn to control his powers. Steven inherits a Crystal Gem, named Rose Quartz, from his mother, which he must use to fight off the evil powers that threaten his existence.

As well as saving the world, Steven must also fit in with his fellow warriors, which isn’t always easy for him.

Similarity Match: 90%
Creator Rebecca Sugar was once a composer of Adventure Time, and she has clearly influenced by the show when writing Steven Universe. There aren’t as many wacky characters than there are in Adventure Time, but they are fun nonetheless.

‘Gravity Falls’ (Disney Animation, 2012-)

Another series like Adventure Time is Gravity Falls. Dipper and Mabel Pines spend the summer at their great uncle’s tourist trap, The Mystery Shack, in Oregon Falls. When they arrive at their holiday destination, they think that they are in for a boring time, that is until mysterious things begin to happen.

Along with handyman Soos and gift shop attendant Wendy, Dipper and Mabel enjoy some of the best adventures of their lives as they investigate the spooky mysteries.

Similarity Match: 85%
Like Adventure Time, the writers of Gravity Falls develop excellent characterisation that viewers will easily warm to and laugh at, of course.

‘Teen Titans Go!’ (Cartoon Network, 2013-)

Superhero roommates Robin, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven and Beast Boy love to save the day and are the first on the scene of any crime. Teen Titans Go is a TV adaptation of the DC comic that has cult status amongst comic book enthusiasts.

As crime starts to dwindle, the team find themselves looking for other activities to occupy their days, with most of them being unsuccessful.

Similarity Match: 75%
Teen Titans Go may feature more immature humour and slapstick style comedy as opposed to the clever humour of Adventure Time, but very, very funny.

‘Family Guy’ (20th Century Fox, 2009-)

Peter Griffin heads up a family of oddballs from the fictional town of Quahog, a place full of characters who are even weirder than the Griffin family. All of the characters in the show like to talk a lot, including a baby called Stewie and a dog called Brian. Yes, there is a talking dog in the show.

There are laughs aplenty as Peter gets caught up in many ‘get rich quick’ schemes and geeky Meg, voiced by Mila Kunis, desperately tries to fit in at school.

Similarity Match: 70%
Family Guy is definitely not a show for children, so will only appeal to adults rather than families. If you like adult friendly animations and don’t mind controversial storylines, Family Guy is for you.
