Based on a supposed true story, ‘The Reef’ sees a group of Australians get into some deep trouble when their boat starts sinking out at sea. Left with no other option, they attempt to swim back the way they came through shark-infested waters. The race is on to reach dry land before their underwater terrors find them and use their legs for tooth picks!

UNDERRATED

‘Open Water’ (Chris Kentis, 2003)

If you’re looking for another movie like ‘The Reef’ that’s based on true events, check out ‘Open Water’. When a vacationing couple go on a scuba diving excursion, things go from picturesque to horrifying when the boat leaves without them. Stuck in the middle of the sea, they have no clue how to get to safety, especially since the sharks have started to gather. In all honesty, I can’t think of anything more horrendous!

95%

Similarity Match

A minimalist and surprisingly effective sea-set horror flick.

MUST-SEE

‘Jaws’ (Steven Spielberg, 1975)

No list of shark films like ‘The Reef’ would be complete without mentioning ‘Jaws’. An obvious one I know, but of all the movies in the genre, this is by far and away the best of the bunch. Set in a small coastal community, ‘Jaws’ sees the local police chief develop an obsession with a killer shark that terrorises his waters. All the while, he faces a battle with the authorities to try and close the beaches, claiming it’s unsafe for people to go back into the sea.

85%

Similarity Match

Tense, foreboding and endlessly entertaining, this is the daddy of the killer shark genre.

UNKNOWN

‘Shark Attack’ (Bob Misiorowski, 1999)

‘Starship Troopers’ star Casper Van Dien appears in this TV movie as a marine biologist who travels to South Africa to find out what happened to a friend who died after a shark attack. Upon hearing of an increase in attacks in the area, he teams up with his friend’s sister in a bid to get to the root of the problem.

70%

Similarity Match

A fishy thriller with an added air of mystery.

UNEXPECTED

‘Soul Surfer’ (Sean McNamara, 2011)

Based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton, ‘Soul Surfer’ sees a surfing enthusiast lose an arm in a dreadful shark attack and strive to find the courage to step back in the water and return to active competition. You have to admire the guts of this teenage girl, but I doubt most of us would even think about going out there after such a horrendous ordeal. Maybe that’s why they haven’t made a film about me yet…

55%

Similarity Match

A heartwarming tale of courage and determination.

If You Like ‘The Reef’, You Will Like

‘Shark Night’ (David R. Ellis, 2011)

When their friend comes out of the lake with a gory wound, Sara Paxton and a group of teens head out into the water in a small speedboat to try and figure out what happened to him. It’s only then that they realise they’re surrounded by hundreds of hungry and enormous sharks. Did somebody say dinner time?

75%

Similarity Match

A teen shark flick that's plenty of fun despite the lack of blood and guts.

Hi, I’m Dale and I’m a Blu-Ray addict. When I’m not obsessively fixating over the ever-growing mountain of movies taking up most of the front room, I’m usually writing about all things Hollywood. Go figure, huh? If I’m not glued to the television watching ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ for the billionth time, you can probably find me crooning in my hard-rocking blues band or having inane conversations with the resident cats.
