Grease is a movie that you will watch over, and over, and over again. One of the films that helped launch the career of John Travolta – and to this day remains the most successful musical of all-time – it puts smiles on people’s faces. Make sure to check out these movies like Grease including West Side Story and Saturday Night Fever.

You’re the One That I Want

Grease is fun. Telling the story of Danny and Sandy and their quest for love, it’s spawned a host of songs that are still popular almost 40 years after it was first released. An absolutely must-see for anyone that considers themselves a fan of musicals, here’s some other films similar to Grease that you have to see today.

Movies Similar to ‘Grease’…

‘West Side Story’ (Robert Wise, 1961)

In many ways, there would be no Grease if it wasn’t for West Side Story. A story so popular it inspired numerous spin-offs (and itself begun as a theatre production), it’s a modern-day Romeo and Juliet tale between two New York gangs.

As these rival factions fight for control of the local turf, events become increasingly more difficult when a controversial relationship starts up between Tony and Maria, despite being in rival groups. Can the pair really make it work with so much working against them?

Fuelled forward by singing and dancing, as well as a tempestuous relationship, if you like Grease you will like West Side Story. It’s as simple as that.

‘Saturday Night Fever’ (John Badham, 1977)

Preparing himself for his turn in Grease a year later, John Travolta plays down on his luck Tony Manero. Living for the weekends, where he gets to engage with his one true passion – dancing – his fortunes start to change when a big dance competition is announced.

After finding a partner – Stephanie – Tony dedicates himself to the tournament, and finds himself falling for his new companion. As well as countless recognisable dance numbers, you also get to enjoy the high-pitched tones of the legendary Bee Gees.

John Travolta once again sings and dances his way to romance in Saturday Night Fever which is, in many ways, a spiritual prequel to Grease.

‘Hairspray’ (Adam Shankman, 2007)

Proving that he’s ‘King of the Musicals’, John Travolta makes yet another appearance in a musical, this time the award-winning Hairspray. Set in the 1960s, dance-obsessed teen Tracy becomes an overnight sensation when she auditions for a spot on the ‘Corny Collins Show’ and walks out victorious.

Hairspray, while having an important message at its heart, never takes itself too seriously, and provides numerous songs designed to get in your head and refuse to leave…!

John Travolta, singing, dancing, comedy and romance. If you didn’t know any better, you could easily think this was actually the second coming of Grease!

‘Dirty Dancing’ (Emile Ardolino, 1987)

Baby’s (Jennifer Grey) summer is ruined when she’s forced to spend it at her parent’s dull retreat. Thankfully, dance instructor Johnny (Patrick Swayze) is on-hand to turn that all around as the two fall in love, despite her father’s disapproval.

Dirty Dancing focuses more on dancing than it does singing, but is a movie like Grease thanks to its romantic story, ‘forbidden love, and feel good ending. And remember: ‘No one puts Baby in the corner’.

Girl meets guy, girl gets guy, girl loses guy, girl gets back with guy thanks to the big dance competition. It’s a classic tale…

‘Grease 2’ (Patricia Burch, 1982)

Michelle Pfeiffer takes the lead in the sequel to the original Grease as Stephanie, the leader of Rydell High School’s Pink Ladies. Tired of her relationship to T-Bird Johnny, she sets her sights on the ‘geeky’ Michael much to the aforementioned Johnny’s distain.

Filled to the brim with singing and dancing, Grease 2 is a similar movie to Grease, if not as popular or well remembered. You’ll still be un-controllingly humming by the end of it, though.

The most recognisable members of the cast may have moved on to other things, but Grease 2 is still a musical that will win over even the most hardened of individuals with its catchy songs.

‘Footloose’ (Herbert Ross, 1984)

When Ren (Kevin Bacon) moves to a small town in the USA, he’s shocked to find that dancing and rock music have been made illegal. Deciding it’s his responsibility to convince the local residents to change their conservative ways, he dances his way into their hearts.

A movie that shapes its entire plot around the idea of wiggling your hips, you’ll be hard pushed to find a film that dedicates itself to the art of dance as much as Footloose.

It may not have as many songs as Grease, but as soon as the opening chords of the title track start to play you’ll be hard pushed to care. A dancing classic.

If You Like ‘Grease’, You Will Like…

There’s no two ways about it: Grease is meant to be pure entertainment. People burst into song at a moment’s notice; dancing in the streets isn’t considered strange; everyone is pretty darned happy… You can’t help but enjoy it, so make sure to see these movies that are similar to Grease.

‘Mamma Mia!’ (Phyllida Lloyd, 2008)

Based on the Abba song of the same name, Mamma Mia! was so successful it spawned its own theatre production which is still going strong today. Donna (Meryl Streep) is preparing for her daughter’s wedding when the bride invites three men from her mother’s past to try and find out who her real father is.

The story is nowhere near as hard-hitting as the plot synopsis makes it sound. Instead, it’s incredibly light-hearted complete with plenty of songs from the Swedish legends.

You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll sing. You’ll dance. And when it’s over you may just think about restarting it and watching it again.

‘Flashdance’ (Adrian Lyne, 1983)

Working for a steel mill in the day and dancing in bars at night, Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) dreams of being able to focus on her passion. When her boss shows an unexpected amount of support for her performing career, he encourages her to go after it. Flashdance wants nothing more than to get your foot tapping while those on-screen dance the night away. And that’s exactly what will happen!

It may be more style than substance, but that’s exactly what anyone will be looking for. Flashdance has it in spades!
