Movies Similar to ‘Dredd’

1. Underrated

‘Judge Dredd’ (Danny Cannon, 1995)

Typifying the 90’s action adventure movies, ‘Judge Dredd’ is a typically over-the-top vehicle lead by Sylvester Stallone (‘Rocky’). Although rarely staying true to its source material, ‘Judge Dredd’ is a switch-your-brain-off type of experience. It has tons of action and absurd one-liners, which are usually associated with the typical Stallone movie. Convicted of a crime he didn’t commit, it’s up to Dredd to clear his name and save the day.

2. Must-See

‘RoboCop’ (Paul Verhoeven, 1987)

This movie like ‘Dredd’ is one of the defining films of the 1980’s. Blending violence and dark humour, it instantly became a massive hit, spawning two sequels, two television shows and a remake. The film is set in a near-apocalyptic Detroit overrun by violent criminals. After a fatal confrontation with a gang, cop Alex Murphy is turned into a crime fighting machine known as RoboCop. Despite its terrible sequels, the original by director Paul Verhoeven (‘Total Recall’) remains a modern classic.

3. Unknown

‘Hardware’ (Richard Stanley, 1990)

Director Richard Stanley explores the wasteland post-apocalyptic theme in this low budget Sci-Fi thriller. After finding what he believes to be scrap bits of metal, an ex-soldier soon comes to realise that the scrap is really part of a killer android. The delightfully silly film features rocker Iggy Pop who brings his unique blend of crazy to the mix.

4. If You Like ‘Dredd’, You Will Like

‘Blade Runner’ (Ridley Scott, 1982)

‘Blade Runner’ is the Sci-Fi epic from master director Ridley Scott (‘Alien’).  The film follows Deckard, a reluctant police officer forced to hunt down Replicants. Harrison Ford was at the top of his game, delivering an astute performance that is as memorable as are his other standout characters, Han Solo and Indiana Jones. The final cut brings the film to a well-rounded conclusion and is the essential version of the Sci-Fi masterpiece.

5. Unexpected

‘Wall.E’ (Andrew Stanton , 2008)

Heroes come in different shapes and sizes. That is the case for Wall.E, a lowly waste-collecting robot who involuntarily embarks on a space adventure. Pixar struck gold with another modern day classic about finding love and following your own destiny. Expect plenty of laughs and also expect scenes that will pull on your heartstrings.
