Where Would We Be without One Slacker’s Poor Judgement?

‘Is it too late to get a burrito?’ Most definitely, but luckily this failed midnight snack attempt leads a layabout to sign up to the US Navy, inviting us along for the action-packed ride. Let’s get things started with more films that, like Battleship, took a pocket sized game and turned it into a huge movie.

Movies Similar to ‘Battleship’…

‘G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ (Stephen Sommers, 2009)

Look no further for dramatic locations, rocket launches and battles. Just like the Hasbro toys and cartoon characters you remember from the old days, the G. I. Joe team are an elite squad sent all over the world to battle the evils of Cobra.

Similarity Match: 90%
Like Battleship, G. I. Joe takes on the world for a toy-themed movie adapted for full speed action and adventure.

‘Transformers’ (Michael Bay, 2007)

A student’s first car turns out to have unexpected abilities, and in its other guise it’s actually an important figure in a war between two robot factions.

The later the instalment, the less I enjoyed Michael Bay’s Transformers movies. It’s a shame, because the first instalment is so much fun, with dynamic action sequences and genuine laughs. My favourite moments are the robots’ ineffectual attempts to blend in – great job, guys, I can barely see you on the side of that house.

Threats from space and an unlikely hero make Transformers a dynamic alternative with a great sense of humour.

‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ (Simon West, 2001)

Sure, this treasure hunt doesn’t feature any invasions of military warfare, but if it’s action you’re looking for, you’re in the right place.

Heiress Lara Croft finds herself on the trail of a legendary object linked to great power, but she’ll have to fight off a rival team of tomb raiders to find it. Between nail biting stunt sequences, she pairs up with an old acquaintance who may or may not be on her side, and travels the world in pursuit of the pieces of the puzzle.

Similarity Match: 70%
We’re short on intergalactic action and huge sequences, but with mystic relics and daring stunts in the mix, you won’t get bored.

If You Like ‘Battleship’, You Will Like…

Hey, there are still plenty games and toys awaiting a cinematic revamp, so while the studios decide what’s up next we should make the most of these action movies with other origins. Comic books, old movies and TV shows inspired our next films.

‘Godzilla’ (Gareth Edwards, 2014)

Gojira’s history dates back to post-WWII Japan, where concerns over the effects of atomic bombing lent a serious side to the character. In Gareth Edwards’ movie, the monster awakes at the site of a nuclear meltdown and crosses the Pacific, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. You can find out more about this movie’s inspiration right here, along with other action titles you’ll love.

Although there are a few moments where it seems like the heroes are running into their attacker all too often, you’ll find some great action sequences too. Besides, this is one disaster movie that isn’t afraid to be ambitious.

Big monsters and even bigger effects should put Godzilla on any Battleship fan’s watch list – and if that’s not enough, both movies know the way to solve any problem is with a massive showdown.

‘Star Trek’ (JJ Abrams, 2009)

JJ Abrams reboots the beloved sci fi series, ripping Kirk and Spock’s happy childhoods to pieces and building the changes right into the plot, courtesy of a wormhole and hostile mining ship. The director loves a good solar flare, which isn’t to everyone’s taste, but you can’t deny it gives the film a look all of its own. The best thing about the movie for Battleship fans, though? The Enterprise crew have a similar dynamic, so you’ll feel right at home.

Camaraderie and planets under threat? Sure, this sounds like a match! Add in those vital scenes on the bridge and you just know these movies will get along.

‘Iron Man’ (Jon Favreau, 2008)

Marvel’s Iron Man first appeared in 1963, spent the 1990s as an animated series, and then blew all expectations out of the water in the Jon Favreau reboot. Whether you’ve been dodging the Avengers movies or you haven’t picked up Tony Stark’s origins story in a bit, go ahead and treat yourself to action heaven.

I don’t need any convincing because, really, how can anyone resist that classic rock soundtrack and the genius playboy turned superhero? So if you don’t mind, I’ve got some Iron Man to watch…

Like Battleship, Iron Man is a movie that gives its premise an extra boost with a military connection – these guys aren’t coming out of nowhere to fight those unstoppable bad guys.

Step Right into the Action

Do you find yourself cheering on the heroes when you’re totally absorbed by a showdown, even though you’ve seen the movie a hundred times? I can’t be the only one! Even though it’s relaxing to get right into an escapist action flick, it’s should also be exhilarating, and I think each of these movies will give you that feeling too.

Got time for another action movie? Oh, go on, you know you have. Our fellow contributor loves these movies like Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1993), and I think you will too.

Hi, I’m Jane, BA (Drama, Film and TV) and MA (Cultural and Creative Industries). When I’m not writing about creative things, I’m designing or planning them. If you’re brave enough to risk an avalanche, look behind the stacks of books and DVDs and you’ll find me balancing a cup of tea, a handful of knitting and a cupcake.
