JoshAs we get older, we drift apart from many of our childhood friends. But movies like ‘About Alex’ give these lost friendships hope, as they follow characters reuniting after a lengthly time apart.

There’s comedy, drama and even an alien invasion thrown in too. If you liked ‘About Alex’, then you will enjoy these suggestions. ~ Josh Sammons

Movies Similar to ‘About Alex’

We hope you enjoy this article and its different recommendation options. Be enchanted by hidden gems you may have never heard of before and (re)discover unmissable classics.

‘American Reunion’ (Hayden Schlossberg, Jon Hurwitz, 2012)

The original cast from the ‘American Pie’ series return for the fourth film in the official gross-out series.

Older but none the wiser, Jim and the gang gather together after time apart. Each of them are at a crossroads in their lives, and see a reunion as the perfect opportunity to get away.

Chaos ensues once again as the gang gather together, which sees old flames once again reignite and old faces appear from the shadows.

Though it doesn’t reach the heights of the first film, ‘American Reunion’ is worth a watch for any fans of the series.

Similarity Match

They are older but not wiser.

‘Grosse Pointe Blank’ (George Armitage, 1997)

In one of his best roles to date, John John Cusack plays an assassin in this smart comedy.

After his latest job ends badly, Martin Blank decides to head home to attend his 10 year reunion.

It’s there he looks to get clarity on his life, and he thinks he has found it when he is reunited with a former girlfriend. Trouble arrises however, when a rival appears on the scene and looks to ruin his life.

Similarity Match

An assassin must tackle his scariest task yet- a reunion.

‘Beautiful Girls’ (Ted Demme, 1996)

Ted Demme, the director of some of my personal favourite films including ‘Life’ and ‘Blow’ takes over the directing seat for ‘Beautiful Girls’.

An all-star cast including Natalie Portman and Uma Thurman bring their A-game to this enjoyable comedy about a group of friends who gather for a 10-year reunion.

There are many layers to this sweet comedy, which is elovated by the performances from its stars.

Similarity Match

A warm comedy about friends reunited.

‘The World’s End’ (Edgar Wright, 2013)

The final part of the ‘Cornetto trilogy’ sees the gang tackling aliens intent on taking over the world.

Simon Pegg stars as Gary King, a cocky 40-something still living in the past. His goal in life is to finish the 20 pub bar crawl he couldn’t finish as a teen.

To do this, he gathers his old gang together, against their best wishes to complete the challenge. But an unexpected stumbling block appears to prevent them from completing it.

Though it’s great to see Pegg, Wright and Frost reunite for the big screen, ‘The World’s End marked a disappointing finale to their trilogy.

Similarity Match

A pub crawl turns violent.

If You Like ‘About Alex’, You Will Like

‘The Big Chill’ (Lawrence Kasdan, 1983)

‘The Big Chill’ is the movie like ‘About Alex’ that truely kickstarted the type of friend reunion films, but to better success.

In the film, an array of stars, including Glenn Close and Kevin Kline star as friends who reunite after the death of their friend.

Though they were all once close friends, they must tackle their differences with their friend as well as one another if they are to find peace.

There’s striking similarities between both films, so much so that some deem this film to be an unofficial sequel of sorts.

Similarity Match

The original 'About Alex'.
