Best of Retro Games: Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3 – Must Buy This!

The Best of Retro Games: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 Owners Must Buy This!

If you’re looking for a retro gem you can’t go wrong with “Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection”. It has something for everyone.

With the average age of gamers constantly on the rise it’s no surprise that a lot of us like to reminisce about the early days. Whether you were a Sega supporter or a Nintendo fiend, you have to admit there were some fantastic games back then.

There are an awful lot of retro collections out there. When it comes to the best of retro games, Xbox and PlayStation owners are utterly spoilt but I’m here to tell you that if you only buy one retro full release title it’s a no brainer.

Why Choose When You Can Have Them All?

I was a Sega child. Don’t get me wrong, as an adult and a video games aficionado I have learnt to appreciate the wonders of the “Mario” universe, and as a teenager I would have sold my soul for another “Banjo Kazooie” title… but still, I first gave my heart to Sega.

You can understand, then, my excitement when I discovered that to me the best retro Xbox games were all going to come in one normal sized game case. I am speaking, of course, about the “Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection”.

48 retro gems. That’s what this one little game gives you. It really makes you appreciate how small games were back then, doesn’t it?

…48 retro gems. That’s what this one little game gives you…

That’s a lot of bang for your buck. And let’s be honest, completing any game back then was a massive achievement. It’s true to say you’ll end up utilising the new save option constantly (and wondering how you ever managed without it), but just think of the children when I point out that younger gamers won’t know what hit them!

The best retro games for Xbox are all available on one disk, and if you wanted to fully complete them (without cheat codes, people!) you are easily looking at the cheapest game per hour you will ever find.

Dolphins and Hedgehogs and Birds, Oh My!

So what exactly is included, I hear you ask. “Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle” will have all but the most perfectionist platformer fans dying constantly, but I really must recommend it. The length and RPG elements in the “Alex Kidd” series meant they are something I was addicted to as a child.

Those of us who remember trying to sleep whilst watching “Tetris” blocks fall on the back of our eyelids will be delighted to discover similarities in the games “Columns” and “Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine”.

Obviously you can’t have a Sega collection so large without more than a sprinkling of our friendly neighbourhood hedgehog. Sure enough, you’ll be reliving some serious eighties time with “Sonic”, “Sonic 2”, “Sonic 3”, “Sonic and Knuckles”, “Sonic Spinball” and “Sonic 3D Flickies Island”. Whilst I’d recommend staying away from the latter, the rest provide hours and hours of true nostalgia.

…More than a sprinkling of our friendly neighbourhood hedgehog…

Other titles include the memorable “Streets of Rage” trilogy, “Shinobi”, numerous “Phantasy Star titles”, “Flicky”, a couple of “Ecco” games and so many more it’s untrue.

Zoey’s Verdict

For any gamer who is old enough to have gamed in the eighties, or any gamer who’s just interested in their history, the “Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection” is just what it says on the tin. You may not find your personal favourite on there but with 48 games I guarantee there’s something for everyone. Even Grandma might enjoy some “Columns”!
